Halkidiki, Greece with Kids: Why We Keep Returning for Long Weekend Getaways
Some places surprise you once. Others keep pulling you back.
For our family, Halkidiki, Greece has become exactly that kind of destination.
What started as a spontaneous long weekend escape from Berlin during Pentecost in 2025 turned into an annual tradition when we returned again in 2026. Both trips followed the same formula: a direct flight from Berlin to Thessaloniki, a short drive to the coast, five days of sunshine, crystal-clear water, and some of the friendliest people we’ve met while traveling.
The funny thing is that our first trip wasn’t even perfect.
In fact, our hotel was pretty terrible.
Yet somehow, we still couldn’t wait to come back.
Why Halkidiki Works So Well for a Long Weekend
One of the biggest challenges when traveling with a school-aged child is making the most of a long weekend without spending half of it in transit.
Halkidiki solves that problem beautifully.
We flew direct from Berlin to Thessaloniki with EasyJet and returned on Aegean Airlines. The flight takes just over two hours, and from the airport it’s only about a 50-minute drive to the western side of the Kassandra peninsula.
The flight times couldn’t have worked better for our family.
Our outbound flight left Berlin around 4 p.m., giving us enough time to pick our daughter up from school and head straight to the airport. By 7:30 p.m. we were landing in Greece.
The return flight didn’t leave until 5 p.m., which meant we could squeeze in one last morning at the beach instead of rushing to the airport. We landed back in Berlin around 6:30 p.m., grabbed McDonald’s for dinner, got our daughter showered and into bed, and she was back at school the next morning as if we’d never left.
For a family weekend getaway, it’s hard to beat.
Our First Stay: Simantro Beach Resort
When we first visited Halkidiki in June 2025, we stayed at Simantro Beach Resort.
Our first impression was actually fantastic.
The grounds were gorgeous. Pine trees stretched down to a beautiful sandy beach, and the entire property felt tucked away from the rest of the world.
Then we checked into our room.
Let’s just say it felt like it hadn’t been updated since the 1980s.
The outdated décor wasn’t really the issue, though. The bigger problem was the air conditioning. June was hot during the day, and although temperatures cooled off at night, our air conditioning simply didn’t work.
We figured we’d make the best of it and sleep with the windows open.
Unfortunately, every mosquito screen on the windows was broken.
We got absolutely eaten alive.
Looking back, we probably should have realized what we were in for when we arrived at the front desk around 9 p.m. and were immediately greeted by other guests complaining about the exact same air-conditioning problem.
The breakfast was actually decent, and the staff did what they could, but the room experience definitely overshadowed the stay.
The Beach That Almost Made Us Forget the Hotel
Despite the hotel issues, Simantro Beach itself was stunning.
The water was crystal clear, the sand was soft, and the shallow entry made it perfect for kids.
Our daughter spent hours building sandcastles and splashing in the water while we enjoyed the kind of scenery that reminds you why people fall in love with Greece.
The only downside?
There was only one hotel serving the beach.
Because the resort was completely booked, every beach lounger seemed to disappear before breakfast.
By 10 a.m., finding a chair felt like an Olympic sport.
On our final morning, I became one of those people.
Determined not to spend another day sitting in the sand, I woke up at 6 a.m. to claim chairs before anyone else.
When I arrived, I found about ten other guests already doing the exact same thing.
The sunrise was beautiful.
The competition for loungers was less beautiful.
Would we return to Simantro Beach?
Absolutely.
Would we stay at the hotel again?
Probably not.
Giving Halkidiki a Second Chance
Because we loved the area so much, we decided to return in May 2026.
This time we stayed at Siviris Golden Beach Hotel in the town of Siviri.
The difference was immediate.
The rooms were modern, clean, and comfortable. The hotel sat just steps from the beach, and instead of feeling isolated, we were within walking distance of restaurants, cafés, a seaside promenade, and even a small arcade area that our daughter loved.
It felt much more like the kind of family-friendly Greek beach town we enjoy exploring.
The Staff That Made the Difference
What stood out most about Siviris Golden Beach wasn’t the room or even the location.
It was the people.
Every single staff member we interacted with was genuinely wonderful.
From the front desk team to the restaurant staff and housekeeping, everyone seemed happy to help and genuinely happy that you were there.
That warmth is something we’ve experienced throughout Greece, but this hotel really took it to another level.
Breakfast was simple and uncomplicated, but we always found something to enjoy while sipping coffee and looking out over the sea.
Honestly, that’s all we really needed.
Simantro Beach vs. Siviri Beach
If you’re wondering which beach was better for kids, it’s honestly a tie.
Both beaches offered soft sand, shallow water, and incredibly clear water.
Both felt safe and easy for families.
The biggest difference wasn’t the beach itself.
It was the atmosphere.
At Simantro, every lounger felt like a competition.
At Siviri, we never had to think about it.
Whether we wanted a chair by the pool or on the beach, there was always space.
That simple difference made the entire holiday feel more relaxing.
So, Would We Go Back?
Without hesitation.
We would go back to Halkidiki because the flights are incredibly convenient for a holiday weekend, the beaches are stunning, the water is crystal clear, and the food is exactly what you hope for when visiting Greece: fresh, simple, and delicious.
Most of all, we keep coming back because of the people.
Everywhere we went, we were welcomed with genuine warmth. Whether it was hotel staff, restaurant owners, or locals we met along the way, everyone seemed genuinely happy to share their little corner of Greece with visitors.
If we changed anything, we’d skip older resort-style properties and stay in a town like Siviri from the start. Having restaurants, a promenade, and evening activities within walking distance made the trip feel far more relaxed and family-friendly.
After two years in a row, Halkidiki has become our favorite answer to one simple question:
“Where can we escape Berlin for a few days and feel like we’ve had a real vacation?”
For now, the answer is Greece.
